Good morning! We were happy to get to the hospital this morning and push the "3" button, instead of the "2" on the elevator to get to the CSU (Children's Surgical Unit). Kayden just had his pacemaker wires pulled, which was good. They have the pacemaker set up after surgery just in case he were to need it. To remove them, they simply give them a little tug and pull them off the heart, and pull them through the skin. Evidentally, he was more annoyed with the nurses holding him, than he was with the wires coming out.
They were going to pull out his last chest tube this morning as well, but he did that on his own yesterday (Feb. 4). The nurse had gone to lunch, and when she came back, his chest tube was out! (with a little tissue on part of that tube). We believe that when his dressing was changed the night before, it loosened the sutures, which made it very easy for the tube to come out. He was super content afterwards. Guess he didn't want the tube in anymore! They did a chest x-ray after he pulled it out and again this morning, and everything looks okay. The pneumothorax that he had the previous few days hadn't changed, so that was great news.
They are weaning him off of his oxygen as well, which is good. We would much rather take him home without carrying around an oxygen tank with us. Other than that, he is looking really good. We expect to be out of the hospital pretty soon (probably the end of this week). We are amazed at how fast a baby can have open-heart surgery, recover, and be out of the hospital in less than 2 weeks... a miracle if you ask me.

I couldn't be happier for all three of you! WAY TO GO SUPER STAR KAYDEN! ! !It truly is a miracle how fast he has recovered, but that is what he was told in the blessing you gave him "Dad". See you all soon.

He pulled out his own chest tube?!? Wow, that is a kid that knows what he wants and when he wants it! You two are in for it with him! hehe ;) Way to go Kayden!

Oh Wow! I can't believe how well he is doing! You'll be so happy to have him home and get to snuggle him all the time! They say NICU and PICU babies aren't as snuggly, but they don't really have a choice :) Warren is very snuggly now. I'm glad Kayden is nursing so well too. Will you be doing any wound care at home or is his wound healing pretty well?
we are so excited to have you back in rexburg!!! are you thinking you'll be home by tomorrow or saturday? michelle, emmeli, and i are coming down there tomorrow night for emmeli's ballroom dance competition. we were going to stop by and see you but maybe we'll be passing you on the freeway! that is great news! they say how children are so resilient to these surgeries! they are so right! they're little miracles!love you! kate

We'll probably be coming home Monday, assuming that we are discharged Saturday or Sunday. It will be kind of comforting to be close for another day or so JUST to be sure everything is okay!!I just talked to Michelle- please feel free to come by. As long as people aren't sick, they can come visit him. We are excited to see you!

yay! back in the real world of internet and blogs! i'm so happy to be back. i felt like i lived in the dark ages for a week without it! loved catching up on kayden's videos and pictures. he is looking great!
Maybe kayden will grow up to be a Doctor, he already knows how to pull out a chest tube. babies recover so quickly is it truly amazing. So glad you are in the home stretch. Can't wait to see you all in March.
